Google Maps has released an offline mode for WearOS smartwatches in a public beta version.

In offline mode, a slashed cloud icon is displayed by Google next to the time in the map view. This accompanies the new “Search & go” tile present on Home and Work shortcuts and the voice input microphone. Users have the ability to directly enter the map view with a single tap, skipping the main feed. Moreover, managing downloaded maps on the smartwatch is facilitated by tapping the new “Offline maps” button and choosing “Manage on Phone”.

The watch app autonomously downloads maps for the local area of the user and synchronizes offline areas that are already saved on the phone. The space occupied by the maps is displayed, and users can delete them with a tap, akin to the Android experience. Google mentions that the watch is automatically synchronized when connected to Wi-Fi and charging.

It’s being reported that Google Maps on Wear OS now supports offline use and is rolling out in the public beta version. Users are seeing a banner after updating the app that says, “Offline maps on the phone are auto-downloaded to the watch.” Above the “Settings” at the bottom of the main menu, an “Offline maps” page can be seen in the latest public beta for Google Maps.

Google-maps can now be used in offline mode on certain smartwatches powered by Wear OS, enabling users to save map data on their devices for navigation purposes even without an internet connection.   Read More
